29 New High Speed Trains for South West Trains
Posted on: 04/08/2015

It was revealed last week that the government had approved a proposal first put forward by First Great Western regarding 29 high speed trains for the company.

The new AT300 trains, produced by Hitachi, will primarily run from London Paddington across services to Plymouth and Penzance- a much needed regeneration with some trains being over 40-years old.

Karen Boswell, Managing Director for Hitachi Rail Europe said: “Today’s announcement builds on our significant and sustained investment in the British rail sector. This contract with First Great Western recognises the quality of Hitachi’s high-speed trains and our world class engineering capability. Hitachi Rail Europe is committed to delivering trains for the UK’s fare-paying customers that are genuinely transformative in terms of speed, capacity and comfort. This new fleet will be a revolution in customer experience for those travelling to and from the south west, and we look forward to delivering these Hitachi trains for use from 2018 onwards.”

It is an exciting point of development for both Hitachi and First Great Western and will allow for significant improvement in comfort and time reduction for those travelling in this area.

Mark Hopwood the Managing Director of First Great Western has commented on the significance of this approval in saying: “We know how important the railway s the economics and communities of the South West and today’s agreement is fantastic news for the region and the rail industry as a whole. These trains will help us deliver faster, more frequent services into the South West, each providing a 14% increase in seats across the routes once they are all in service.”

With the on-going infrastructure development programmes occurring across the country, such as HS2 and Crossrail, it could be seen as about time that other regions benefitted from similar improvements.
