Aecom, Deloitte and HOK to Restore the Houses of Parliament
Posted on: 07/01/2015

Architectural firms Aecom, Deloitte and HOK will join together this summer to formulate a report regarding the much needed restoration of the Houses of Parliament.

The consortium has revealed that the works could take a minimum of five years, with temporary or partial relocation of MPs occurring in the meantime.

Dr Richard Ware, programme director for Palace of Westminster restoration and renewal said “the building is getting older faster than we’re able to deal with it. We are bringing in the necessary expertise to advice on repairing this historic building of national importance so that it is equipped for the future”.

Whilst discussions for the Houses best interest will begin this summer, a full report will not be achieved until spring 2016. Due to the intricate details and complexities of the building the expected start date of works is not until 2020/21, a significant delay for a building so obviously in need of restoration.

Alex Bell, the consortium’s programme director and a partner of Deloitte Real Estate has commented “It is clear that the UK’s most iconic national treasure is in need of significant investment and it’s been a privilege to help build a picture of understanding. We are delighted that further joint early stage analysis and planning will be progressed over the next 18 months in accordance with accepted best practice and drawing on all the recent mega-project successes of UK PLC.”

The decision to have a consortium of firms was made back in December 2013 after seeing the success of other major public projects that have been headed in the same way, such as the Olympics and Crossrail. John Hicks, director and head of government & public sector at Aecom said “A focus on shared goals and a real spirit of collaboration between the public and private sector have also contributed to the success of the programme”.

This renovation gives the involved architects the opportunity to modernise a building that has remained the heart of London city since the 19th Century, therefore being selected for this job is an excellent accomplishment and worthy of celebration.
