Arcadis, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff and Grimshaw celebrate completion of second stage of London Bridge Station!
Posted on: 31/08/2016

This week saw the opening of the street level concourse and through platforms of London Bridge Station, successfully delivered by Arcadis, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff and Grimshaw, working for Costain. As part of Network Rail’s Thameslink Programme, the station is required to be capable of handling the almost 200,000 commuters it saw daily, leading this project to become one of the most complex and ambitious station redevelopments to date in the UK.

The development required a design that will accommodate a significant increase in the already substantial numbers of passengers, provide a safe change from six through and nine terminus platforms to nine through and six terminus without disruption, as well as acknowledging the iconic station’s status as a key transport and heritage location.

Changes to the station include clear visual and spatial connections to platforms and surrounding routes, that should help ease passenger flow, as well as a new entrance on St Thomas Street which should improve access from neighbouring sites such as the Shard. The design team used a modular approach to construction to ensure the station remained fully operational while work took placed. Work is on schedule and due to be completed in January 2018.

Mark Middleton, Partner at Grimshaw has said, “London Bridge Station is an iconic site both within the city’s urban fabric and its busy transport network. It’s great to see passengers using the new concourse and platforms for the first time, being guided through a station that is becoming more unified and easy to navigate with each passing milestone. The team’s vision for the redevelopment is transforming the surrounding quarter, connecting communities in the north and south, and keeping London moving. We are now looking to the finish line ahead of the official opening of the station in 2018.”
