Balfour Beatty completes Olympic Stadium conversion!
Posted on: 15/08/2016

International infrastructure group Balfour Beatty has completed conversion work on the iconic former London Olympic stadium. The works began in January 2014 to convert the single-purpose stadium to a multi-functional venue and cost £190 million, with over 1700 people employed on site at peak times.

West Ham United Football Club will begin using the regenerated venue as their home stadium in August and their first game will be against Bournemouth. The stadium has also already been host to several Rugby World Cup matches in 2015.

The complex works on the stadium included the world’s heaviest anti-gravity roof as well as reintegration of the original, iconic lighting towers. Sustainability was a focus for Balfour, over 6000m of cable, 3800 lights and 1000 mechanical and electrical components were reused, as well as 19,000 tonnes of recycled demolition material.

Stephen Tarr, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s Major Projects business said, “We have utilised some of the most complex engineering techniques on this project, capitalising on our in-house capabilities and expertise to ensure the project was delivered safely to a high specification whilst boosting the local economy through employment opportunities; it’s a project we are all immensely proud of”.
