Bath Quays Bridge Unveils 6 Design Finalists
Posted on: 16/09/2015

Six designs have been unveiled for a new bridge to be constructed across the River Avon. Bath and North East Somerset Council opened the competition in February 2015, and have now shortlisted the 50 entries down to 6 finalists.

The bridge, which will cost roughly £2.5 million in total, will be the first new bridge the city has seen in over a century, and will link between Bath Quays and the city centre. The public will have the chance to voice their opinions during the anonymous exhibition at the One Stop Shop on Manvers Street, Bath, where the designs are currently being showcased during the 14th-25th September.

The six firms consist of AL_A, Grimshaw Architects, Heneghan Peng, Marc Mimram, Flint & Neill and Price & Myers. With all firms having had previous experience in designing public structures, a council jury will announce the winning design in November. Whilst the designs range in style, the council has specified a ‘simple and elegant’ feel and must follow 7 key values, including heritage, health and wellbeing, quality, and environment.

It is hoped that the bridge, which will be named Bath Quays Bridge, will help to ‘reinvent’ the area it is planned for, which is currently a neglected and overlooked site. The council are very aware of this and believe that by linking Bath Quays to the city centre, this will open the district up to more opportunities. Once it has opened, Bath Quays will be able to establish more riverside leisure and commercial activities.

Support for the project has been positive, with Patrick Anketell-Jones, cabinet member for economic development, saying that the bridge will be a ‘game-changing development’ for the city. The UK has seen many cities increasing their investment in pedestrian and cycle bridges recently, as an alternative to improve current traffic difficulties and also to create new connecting routes.
