Following consultation with residents and stakeholders Taylor Wimpey Central London has secured planning approval for almost 300 homes in the south London Nine Elms regeneration zone, an area currently undergoing massive regeneration.
The London borough of Wandsworth’s planning committee approved the Battersea Park East project, which will involve the construction of a residential lot, redevelopment of a local primary school (funded by Taylor Wimpey) and a £7.8m contribution towards improving transport infrastructure in this area. The proposals will transform the area between Queenstown Road and Battersea Park stations, creating an exciting mix-used development of retail, residential, educational and public space contributions.
At current, the 4.5 acre site is unfortunately split by the presence of two Victorian railway viaducts, housing commercial and light industrial buildings as well as the school. The approved scheme is designed to re-join this area into one communal space through the use of pedestrian and cycle routes, making use of the viaduct arches as walkways.
Regeneration of this area will open up 3,676sqm of flexible commercial floor space, offering opportunities for shops, offices, restaurants, cafes and community uses. During an earlier consultation back in January 88% of those asked agreed that this site is in need of regeneration and 100% supported the refurbishment of the railway arches for retail and commercial space.
This is part of the masterplan of the Nine Elms transformation, which will strongly improve this area, the rest of London and the UK economy as a whole. Work is expected to begin next year and will provide thousands of jobs both during its construction and in its permanent existence.
