As the Sir Howard Davies’ Airport Commission summer meeting edges closer, more and more people and choosing to back Gatwick airport as the favourite for the bid for the new runway.
Bookmaker Betfair has now raised Gatwick as 4/6 odds to be chosen as the winner of the new runway by the Airport Commission before October 2015, whereas competitor Heathrow is at 11/10.
Paddy Power, another bookmaker, has placed Gatwick at 11/10 in an ongoing bet to see which runway is up and running by 2025 with Heathrow at 6/4.
Both bookies have forwarded Gatwick as the favourite, with Chancellor George Osborne saying earlier this week that: “Our physical infrastructure is not nearly good enough, and previous governments ducked the difficult decisions”- clearly pressing for the runway building to commence sooner rather than later.
He continued: “In this Parliament we’re going to legislate for and start building the high speed rail links that other countries build decades ago [… and] we’re going to ramp up investment in roads.
“And when we get Howard Davies’ report on a new runway in the South East, we’re going to take the decision and get it built”.
With Sir Howard Davies expected to make his recommendation in the upcoming weeks it will hopefully not be long before a firm decision is made by the government; however at current no firm date has been set.
