British Oil Refinery Milford Haven to Close
Posted on: 11/11/2014

Britain is to lose one of its seven oil refineries after the sale of Milford Haven Oil Refinery fell through.

Murphy Oil, owner of the refinery, has been trying to sell the facility for several years now but has been unsuccessful. In the past few months discussions have been taking place with Kleusch Refining limited regarding a possible sale. However last week it was announced this was no longer a possibility. The sale was depending upon a combination of government support and private financing from banks, however when push came to shove Kleusch was unable to make the deadline, despite receiving a previous extension.

Brian Kelly, vice president for UK operations at Murphy Oil has stated that the facility is now shut down and after it has been cleaned up, it will be renovated to suit as a petroleum storage unit for UK distribution. This will have a big impact on the UK production industry as Milford Haven was responsible for refining petrol, fuel oil, jet fuel, LPG and propylene, processing 135,000 barrels of crude oil each day (a 10th of the UK’s refined products output).

There will be over 350 job losses as a result of this, Stephen Crabb, conservative MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire and secretary of state for Wales, stated that “I feel desperately sorry for the workforce and their families who have endured months of uncertainty only for the sale to collapse once again… We all now need to focus on how we minimise the significant economic impact the closure will have on our country. Both the UK and Welsh government will shortly outline a package of measures to help those affected."

This comes as the latest effect of the UK oil slump, which has been exacerbated by a decline in demand and increase in overseas opposition- due to modern equipment and the US plants use of cheap shale oil.

Despite the current situation here at Blueprint we maintain optimistic that the UK oil industry still has a strong future and we encourage anyone looking to get involved in that to give us a call.
