China’s tallest building reaches completion and becomes second tallest in the world
Posted on: 12/01/2016

The Shanghai tower, in China, was completed at the end of 2015 after construction started in November 2008. Located in the heart of the city’s Finance district, the tower, which is now of ‘megatall’ status, stands at 632m. In order to achieve ‘megatall’ status, the structure must be over 600m; the Shanghai Tower is now the third building in the world to achieve this status.

The tower was designed by American architects Gensler, whilst Chinese architect Jun Xia led the design team during the project. With 121 stories, the floors within Shanghai Tower cover office space, entertainment venues, retail, a conference centre, a luxury hotel as well as culture amenity spaces.

As the construction site is in a river basin, a firm foundation of 980 foundation piles were placed underground to a depth of 282ft. 2.15m cubic feet of concrete was then poured in to set a 20ft thick baseboard for anchoring the main building.

Its transparent spiral form saves 24% in structural wind loading, when compared with a rectangular building of the same height. The tower twists about one degree per floor, to offset the wind effect at higher altitude, which will help the skyscraper withstand the city’s frequent typhoons.
