Crossrail to be renamed Elizabeth line in honour of the Queen

Crossrail is to be renamed the Elizabeth Line in honour of the Queen, when the new high-capacity metro service opens through central London in 2018.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the stretch between Reading and Senfield via Maidenhead, Slough and central London will change from Crossrail to Elizabeth Line from 2018.

The announcement came today from London Mayor Boris Johnson, whilst the Queen was visiting the Crossrail works at Bond Street. The service is set to open in Twyford, Maidenhead, Taplow, Burnham, and Slough in 2019.

Over half a million passengers will use the £14.8bn Elizabeth Line per day, with a fleet of new 200-metre-long trains. The central, underground section will open in December 2018 with a full through service from Reading and Heathrow in the west across to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east starting in 2019.

Boris Johnson said of the renamed line,

“I think it’s truly wonderful that such a significant line for our capital, will carry such a significant name from our country. As well as radically improving travel right across our city, the Elizabeth line will provide a lasting tribute to our longest-serving monarch.”

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, added,

“This is an example of British engineering at its best and will transform the way people travel across London and beyond from 2018, bringing better and faster journeys, while boosting jobs and driving economic growth.”
