Cruise Line Terminal Proposed for London Thames
Posted on: 27/08/2015

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London has given his support to suggestions of a commercial cruise line terminal on the London Thames River at Greenwich.

Proposals for Enderby Wharf, SE10, were approved for development by the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s Planning Board last month. The Wharf will allow for mid-size ships- which may measure up to 230m in length and carry a maximum of 1,600 passengers- to dock in the Capital.

The development- which is expected to be fully operational by 2017- has attracted opposition from residents regarding the potential of increasing particulate and noise pollution as a result of the 1,154 new homes, restaurants and bars.

Such arguments have been brushed aside by Cllr Danny Thorpe, the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, who stated that the Mayor had “submitted its measures to independent scrutiny and found them to be satisfactory.”

The Mayor’s office has also released a statement that they are “satisfied with measures put in place by the Royal Borough to ensure robust monitoring of air quality, with nearly half a million pounds being committed towards air quality monitoring and improvement.”

Cllr Thorpe has protested for the benefits that the terminal would bring, arguing it as “an important step forward, not just for Greenwich, but for the capital…. This landmark development will bring thousands more visitors to the borough.”

This will bring hundreds of jobs to the London capital and has the potential to bring a dramatic boost to tourism.
