David Cameron has been discussing England’s roads in recent weeks and has declared an urgent need for improvement, thus has agreed to an investment of £15 billion towards a Highway Agency framework, which will see the renovation of several motorways and A-roads across the UK.
The project will take place over a five year period, having a variety of consultancies and contractors working together to complete the work, including companies such as; Atkins, Hyder, Jacobs UK, Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall, Amey and Carillion Construction Limited. This innovative collaboration approach is hoped to allow for ‘large scale improvements to England’s strategic roads in an efficient and speedy manner causing minimum disruption to road users’ (Graham Dalton, Highways Agency Chief Executive).
The first works will begin this year, starting with improvements to the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon and development of the M5 J4-6, M1 J16-19 and the M6 J16-19, and they are the first step in the “government’s firm commitment to investing in infrastructure to boost the economy”.
David Cameron has already given generously to rail improvement projects within the UK so it may be seen as about time that our roads are provided with the same treatment.
With over 35 firms involved and £5 billion on offer for its accomplishment, the Collaborative Framework project is set to create a substantial number of jobs over the five years.
