ETCS coming to London in 2017
Posted on: 11/01/2016

The European Train Control System (ETCS) is set to be installed in trains around London from 2017. Eversholt Rail has signed a contract with Alstom’s signalling business, SSL, to fit ETCS to its Class 365 Fleet. Part of Network Rail’s programme requires ETCS to be fitted to roll out the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) across the UK network.

ETCS is a signalling, control and train protection system designed to replace the discordant safety systems currently employed by European railways, particularly on high-speed lines. ETCS uses standard trackside equipment and a standard controller within the train cab, where all lineside information is passed to the driver electronically. In turn, this removes the need for lineside signals which may otherwise be impossible to see or adjust to at high speed.

A National Joint ROSCO Project (NJRP) has been established to deliver the trial fitment of ETCS to each of the affected fleets in the UK- the First in Class (FiC). The first fleet to have its FiC contained will be Eversholt Rail’s Class 365. The design process will undergo fitment, integration and reliability testing in 2017 before conversion of further units in the Class 365 fleet, prior to full ETCS operations on the East Coast main line.

The FiC moderation will be completed at Alstom’s Wembley Train-care Centre, who will work in close collaboration with the project team that includes Eversholt Rail Group, Alstom and Govia Thameslink Railway.

Through this approach of in-cab signalling, the total cost of railway operations will be reduced, and will change the way railway is operated and maintained.
