EU Approves Funding for Fehmarn Belt Project
Posted on: 29/07/2015

Denmark has received approval from the EU commission for the Fehmarn Belt Project, a 19KM undersea road-rail tunnel that will connect Denmark and Germany.

More than €589m of the €8.7bn project will be funded by the EU itself. The commission have confirmed that the plans comply with all EU state aid rules and thus will give significant investment towards the project.

EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said: “The Fehmarnbelt fixed link will considerably shorten travel times between Germany and the Eastern part of Denmark and the Nordic countries to the benefit of both people and the economy.

“Therefore, I am very pleased that we have today approved the public financing of the project of under EU state aid rules.”

It is expected to open in 2024 and will offer a four-lane motorway and a double-track railway linking Copenhagen and Hamburg directly- reducing the current travel time from five hours to just over two hours.
