Foster + Partners to Design Qatar Stadium
Posted on: 10/03/2015

Foster + Partners have been awarded as designers of the stadium that will host the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2022 World Cup tournament in Qatar.

Developments for events such as the World Cup and the Olympics are always surrounded by much debate, and the Qatar 2022 cup is no exception, especially as the stadium will be built in a new city called Lusail. This new city, under the development of Qatari Diar, will cost over £30billion in costs and will certainly raise the bar for event stadiums such as this for future competitors.

Norman Foster, founder of the design partnership, has said: “This is an exciting step forward in stadium design- it will be the first to break the mould of the free-standing suburban concept, and instead anticipates the grid of this future city, of which is will be an integral part.

“The project also pioneers the idea of an ongoing life for the stadium beyond the big event. The environmental strategies, particularly those that address the players as well as the spectators, will also be of international interest to the sporting public as well as those concerned with the architecture.”

It is hoped that by involving the stadium within such a considerable external project, that the use of the stadium will fare better than its predecessors, such as the 2014 Brazil £900million stadium which is currently being used by the government as a bus depot.

This is an excellent opportunity for Foster + Partners, as well as engineering partners Arup and architecture firm Populous, and it the result of the stadium and Lusail will be highly anticipated worldwide.
