Government Refuse to Ban Fracking
Posted on: 29/01/2015

UK MP’s have overthrown a bid to suspend fracking for shale gas, however the government did agree to 13 new restrictions or limits before shale gas extraction can take place conforming to Labour’s proposals.

At a previous debate MP’s had argued that a ban should be placed on shale gas as it could contradict the governments intent to tackle climate change, with the Environmental Audit Committee warning that there are “huge uncertainties” when it comes to the long-term effects on the environment from fracking.

In the final Commons debate, committee chair Joan Walley supported an amendment put forward by a group of cross-party MPs demanding for fracking to be suspended for an undefined period of up to 30 months until a detailed assessment has been carried out.

This measure was not strongly supported and was defeated 308 votes to 52; however the government granted a compromise by including labour’s 13 additional ‘pre-fracking’ tests. These are to include an environmental assessment and ensuring that local residents have been consulted on an individual basis, whilst drilling in national parks has been banned completely.
