Government unveils £1.2 Billion local roads funding for Councils
Posted on: 16/01/2017

Transport Minister Andrew Jones has announced that £1.2 Billion has been allocated to improving roads, cutting congestion and improving journey times.

Mr. Jones stated that "Roads play a significant part in everyday life linking people with jobs and businesses with customers, which is why this government is investing record amounts improving and maintaining highways across the country to help motorists.”

The Department for Transport has initiated a new trail with Thurrock and York Councils to examine how potholes are identified and managed. A vehicle will be mounted with a ‘Pothole-spotter’ system and will then be deployed to identify road surface problems before they become potholes.

Included within the £1.2B budget, £75 million can be bid for by local councils to repair and maintain local infrastructure such as bridges, street lighting and rural roads.
