Green Light for Kingston Prison Redevelopment!
Posted on: 07/07/2016

Leading heritage developer City & Country have received planning permission from Portsmouth City Council to develop a new residential area at the site of the former Kingston Prison.

The company will construct 230 new homes and regenerate the historic site, converting the cell blocks into apartments. The development will include a small café whilst retaining the listed walls and gatehouse.

The managing director of City & Country, Helen Moore said; ‘City & Country has an excellent track record of restoring and breathing new life into some incredibly challenging buildings, and we are confident that we can deliver new schemes at each prison that not only enhance the original building, but also help to enrich its surroundings.’

Over 5000 residents and community representatives provided feedback on the proposals. Further public consultations were held to determine what should happen with other prisons in Shepton Mallet, Dorchester and Gloucester.

Richard Winsborough, associate director of planning at City & Country said; ‘Restoring these buildings was of paramount importance to us when we purchased Kingston Prison and we are pleased that members at Portsmouth City Council recognised the need of delivering a new future for the redundant site.’
