HS2 Birmingham to Crewe Link to Open Six Years Early
Posted on: 30/11/2015

George Osborne has announced that the high-speed rail link between Birmingham and Crewe, High Speed 2, will be opened six years earlier than planned. Set to open in 2027, the extension of HS2 to Crewe will reduce journey times to London by 45 minutes, meeting government transport policies to improve transport links with the North.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said that the £55.7bn project will provide an ‘economic transformation for the whole country’, with Osborne adding, ‘In my Spending Review we committed to the biggest rise in transport spending in a generation meaning that major projects like the construction of HS2, to link the Northern Powerhouse to the south, can begin’. The new timetable means a part of the second phase of the project is due to open only a year after the first phase from London to Birmingham starts operating.

In his Spending Review last week, Osborne confirmed that the government would invest £13bn in improving northern transport links over the course of the parliament, including £200m to support Transport for North (TfN). Former CBI director general John Cridland has been appointed as the first chair of TfN, commenting on the opportunities that are now available to ‘improve transport capacity and links across the North’.

By bringing this stage of the HS2 forward by six years, this will play a big role in connecting the entire region with the rest of the country, with many cities gaining the much-needed rail capacity and faster services to support growth and deliver jobs.
