Hinkley Point- A Nuclear Catalyst?
Posted on: 09/03/2015

EDF Energy managing director has emphasised the importance of Hinkley Point C in relation to the UK nuclear sector and how the £16bn construction project will act like a catalyst for other schemes.

EDF currently remains in talks with its investors and contractors in regards to the Somerset Hinkley plant, with a deliberation on this decision not expected until after the election.

Cadoux-Hudson said last week: “What I’m absolutely sure of is that, unless we are successful in making these next steps, it will be extremely difficult for anyone else to follow on in the UK.”

He has shown faith that the scheme will go ahead: “The unrest in large parts of Europe and in the rest of the world, the need for an indigenous source of supply, is a very important characteristic.

“I think that you’ll find that the marginal benefit of electricity greatly outweighs the cost for most people.”

If Hinkley point is approved the government will offer subsidies towards electricity production and following the European Commission’s meeting last October will guarantee some of its construction debt.
