An international competition has been announced for the chance to design the Bristol Arena Project, to be constructed close to Temple Meads railway station in central Bristol. Contestants will face the challenge of developing the former diesel depot site into a multipurpose arena, complete with a 12,000 capacity entertainment arena.
Design teams will need to have a range of skill sets including architectural, structural and building engineering expertise in order to compete, in addition to having comprehensive experience within the performance venue field and developing large urban spaces.
The importance of this arena for Bristol cannot be underestimated and George Ferguson, Mayor of Bristol, commented on this as the reasoning for the competition: “The Bristol Arena is key to the city region’s future and will act as a major catalyst to the development of the Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone. We have to grasp the opportunity to design a building that not only works really effectively but is an inspiring place that enriches this new quarter of the city… RIBA Competitions has helped to deliver some of the most outstanding buildings around the UK and is well placed to help us secure the best possible design team”.
The competition is open to all qualified design teams globally and a shortlist of five teams will be selected to actually contribute to the design stage. The winning team will be given control over the project (with a budget of £90million this will be a substantial triumph) and the arena is expected in summer 2017.
Large scale urban renewals like this are massive employers within the building services sector, and with this announcement so early on in the year it is very promising for the sector as a whole.
With several of our clients being suitable for the competition we will be keeping close track of this project, for up to date articles on this and similar news please follow us on twitter @BlueprintBS.
