King’s Cross Gasholders to Be Re-Erected in Restoration Scheme

Three Victorian gas holders are being re-erected as part of a restoration project, headed by developers Argent.

The Grade II listed gasholders, known as the Triplets, formed a landmark in the King’s Cross area for 150 years, but were dismantled as part of the Channel Tunnel rail link project. Since 2001, they have been under refurbishment, but are now set to become a residential development along Regents Canal.

The 123 columns that make up the three gasholders will hold three ‘drums’ of accommodation, with 145 homes, one-room studio flats, and up to four-bed houses. The studios will start at £785,000, with two bed homes costing £1.3m.

Project Director Tom Goodall, of developers Argent, said their primary job was to structurally repair them rather than make them look new. They used a 30-D laster to analyse the ten-ton columns for cracks, and tested the pillar strength to rebuild weathered and worn ironwork sections.

The gasholders which are grouped together, differ from other holders and are structurally linked in a 12 column ‘core’ at the centre. Of the 123 columns, 12 are completed and in place, and it is predicted that the work will last until the end of the year.
