Recently the government announced its wish for all public projects to be compliant with Level 2 BIM by 2016. (Level 2 BIM being crudely defined as a series of domain specific models e.g. architectural, structural, services, etc., with the provision of a single environment to store shared data and information.)
Following this announcement there has been a significant rise in the recruitment of BIM experts. Skanska UK is one company who has decided to invest early and adhere to increased BIM recruitment now. The company have already begun their search for new employees with BIM experience “this includes operational BIM co-ordinators, through to BIM managers who take a more strategic view, together with high level, very specialised managers”, in addition to starting BIM training for current staff members.
These reactions are something that have been echoed across the building services sector however this rise in recruitment has highlighted a shortfall in those within the BIM expertise, especially managers, causing the basic average earnings to push past the ranges of £35,000-£55,000.
With the government’s 2016 deadline a strong encouragement of this new With this new surge of BIM recruitment many believe that such trends will continue as it gets closer to the date, however Skanska UK’s head of BIM Malcom Stagg has said “I think we could then see recruitment tailing off. The industry is also likely to change, with most people having a greater level of expertise in BIM in the future, whatever their role. People without BIM in their title will have BIM competence.”
BIM is a new and emerging area, with plenty of opportunities for people to develop and expand their careers. We are currently recruiting for a BIM Technician in the Cambridge area on a permanent basis- for more information on this role click here or call us on 02392 603030.
