Luton Airport Reveals £200m Light Rail Link Plans
Posted on: 18/04/2016

Luton City Council have revealed plans for a £200m light railway system from between the airport terminal and London St Pancras, via Luton Airport Parkway station. The £200m system, which would carry passengers to and from the terminal in under 30 minutes, is part of a £1.5bn investment programme by the City Council to transform the town over 20 years.

Arup have been selected to design and procure the scheme and will submit planning applications later this year. The 2.2km route would head out from Stirling Place, alongside the mainline railway and cross over Airport Way before it would pass through the existing airport cark park for arrival at the central terminal area.

The City Council will fund the scheme, with work expected to begin early next year and completion in 2020. The light rail link would span a 2.2km route, and would run 24 hours a day.

Other major investors are also involved with developing the town over the next few years, including mixed-use developments, retail expansions, town regenerations as well as a planned new football stadium. Developers involved are J2 Global, Henry Boot Developments, and 2020 Developments.

Cllr Sian Timoney, Deputy Leader of Luton Council, said:

“The time is absolutely right for Luton following significant investment in supporting infrastructure at Junction 10a, the Luton Dunstable Busway and the Luton Town Centre Transport Scheme. “We have partnered with a number of respected international developers and investors in ambitious development plans with more than £1.5bn investment potential.”
