MeyGen: The Leader of Tidal Energy
Posted on: 07/10/2014

Atlantis, a Scottish tidal stream energy company, has managed to secure a 25-year seabed lease from the owner Crown Estate to allow for the construction of their project MeyGen, a 398 MW tidal array project. The lease was acquired after MeyGen adhered to the extensive development obligations contained within its five-year Agreement for Lease, signed in October 2010. Following the funding of over £50 million pounds by Atlantis, the Department of Energy & Climate Change and The Crown Estate itself, construction of MeyGen is set to go forward later this year.

The first phase of construction, named Phase 1a, will see the installation of four 1.5MW turbines as well as the onshore infrastructure needed to support the project. The first electricity is anticipated to be delivered to the grid by 2016 providing enough electricity to supply 42,000 homes in Scotland.

In addition to the obvious perk of electricity being delivered by a renewable source, the first phase will also provide information regarding the environment and further information which will allow for subsequent planning of the project. Furthermore, the first phase alone will result in the creation of 50 direct jobs, and 70 more indirect jobs via the supply chain.

With encouragement from the government to go green, more projects utilising renewable energy resources are coming forward. If MeyGen proves successful it is likely to act as a catalyst for the global tidal power market. Energy Secretary Ed Davey agreed with this comment stating that the ‘MeyGen project stands as an exciting development for renewable energy and puts Scotland and the UK on the map as a global leader in marine technology’.

Blueprint Recruitment are looking to hear from Naval Architects, Procurement Managers and Hydrographic Survey Managers who would be interested in getting involved in such projects.
