Network rail are taking advantage of the Christmas holidays by sending out an ‘army’ of 11,000 engineers on Christmas day to carry out essential updates required on lines and stations including new tracks being laid, new flyovers and junctions. Whilst 90% of services will run normally those planning to travel over the Christmas period have been warned to plan travel well in advance and expect delays, especially on Christmas Day and Boxing day- when the majority of work is taking place.
Those planning to travel between London and Scotland have been warned to avoid main line trains between these destinations and to use alternative routes instead. As, on account of the works on the West Coast main lines, the line will be shut between Euston station in London and Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire between 24th December and the 29th therefore travellers between these destinations should expect delays.
Jim Syddal, acting route managing director for Network Rail, said: "There is never a good time to carry out this type of work and we have liaised closely with the train operators to plan for it to take place at a traditionally quieter time on the railway. We apologies for the inconvenience caused but the works are essential to improve the network and maintain reliable services for the millions of passengers who travel on the West Coast main line every year."
Michael Roberts, director general of the Rail Delivery Group, which represents operators and Network Rail, reiterated the point made by Syddal saying: "Building a better, safer railway is something we do every day but major holidays are when significantly fewer people travel, and the industry has been working more closely than ever this year to ensure that disruption to passengers is minimized and people are kept on trains wherever possible."
At Blueprint we have several contractors and clients who will be involved in these improvements and works, we appreciate the service they are providing and consider the slight delays that may be encountered over this period as worthwhile to the general improvement of England’s infrastructure.
