Network Rail Threatens Union Strike
Posted on: 12/05/2015

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union has revealed that workers for Network Rail will be joining together in favour of a UK-wide strike following strong arguments regarding pay rate.

The workers voted 4-1 in favour of the action after they were refused a wage rise from Network rail, who own and maintain a large proportion of Britain’s railways.

The Union turned down an offer from Network rail which included a one-off payment of £500 to staff members, and three years of rises to match the inflation incurred over the same period. A no compulsory redundancy commitment was also rejected by the union’s members.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said “It is now down to Network Rail to start taking this issue seriously, to understand the deep-seated grievance felt by their staff and to come forward with a renewed offer which protects pay and jobs.”

He described the one-off payment as “wholly inadequate” and doubted the credibility of the no compulsory redundancy commitment.

Mr Cash now believes the union to be ‘a step closer’ to a national rail strike, the first one that the UK would see for two decades.

However, it appears that a rail strike is not on our door step as both sides are prepared to keep on talking in an attempt to work this out. They may occur over the bank holiday weekend, but there is a strong chance that an agreement would have been reached before this action has to occur.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said he would not support any industrial action, he said: “I want to see Network Rail and the unions back round the negotiating table, hammering out a deal.

“Rail passengers will not thank the unions for inflicting this unnecessary disruption.”
