New £320m Oxford to London Marylebone rail line opening 2016

Chiltern Railways and Network Rail have agreed on a deal to construct a new rail line linking Oxford and London. Costing £320m, it will be the first train line to link a major British city to London in a century.

According to David Cameron, it was a ‘historic moment’, with commuters being able to travel from the north of Oxford to London Marylebone in under an hour. The train will stop at 2 new stations, Oxford Parkway and Bicester Village, which Network Rail chief executive Mark Carne was much needed for the area.

“By working closely with Chiltern Railways on this part of our railway upgrade plan, we have been able to deliver precisely what its customers want -- a new transport option for Oxford-based business and leisure travellers to London,” He said.

Bicester Village has seen a rebuilt station which will directly link the retail park to London in a 46 minute journey. Two new fast trains will run on an hourly basis to deliver commuters between Oxford Parkway to Marylebone.

Mark Carne added, “It will also help provide the capacity needed as rail travel is forecast to double over the next two decades”. It is predicted that Oxford Parkway will attract an additional 250,000 return commuter journeys annually.

David Cameron supported this, saying the new line meant an increase in trains, faster journey times, and better transport links for people living and working in the area. The direct line into the city of Oxford is expected to open in 2016.
