New Museum of London Reveals Six Shortlisted Designs!
Posted on: 14/06/2016

Museum of London have shortlisted six designs for the museum’s new home at Smithfield market. Currently located at the Barbican, the museum will be moved to Smithfield market, which currently consists of three Victorian market buildings and covers 25,000 square meters.

Organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants, the shortlisted schemes are set for public exhibition from 10th June to 5th August, with an expert panel choosing the winner later this summer. The shortlisted firms include BIG, Diener & Diener, Caruso St John, Stanton Williams, Lacaton & Vassal and studio Milou architecture.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has funded the £200,000 competition, saying,

“We are providing support for this competition so that the museum can conduct a global search and ultimately create a major cultural destination and a new landmark for the capital.”

The new location would allow the size of the museum to increase from 17,000sq m to over 27,000sq m, which would allow for a larger display. The project is set to open by 2021.
