Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh has come to the centre of attention of several news articles recently. A research team from the university’s centre for enhanced oil recovery has been working on a technique known as low-salinity water injection, which could offer a breakthrough in oil extraction.
This research comes as welcomed news to all involved in North Sea oil extraction, especially considering the decline in oil and gas production over the past few years, with a 10% decline in last year’s production alone. It has been suggested that new technologies and techniques are a ‘game changer’ for the industry allowing greater access to the remaining oil in the North Sea, not only increasing the quantity extracted but also extending the life of the reservoirs.
The emphasis on these techniques offering ‘cleaner’ extraction has attracted much attention and further investment into the implementation of this research. This comes as good news to the next generation entering the North Sea related job market, estimated to currently employ over 450,000 people across the UK.
With growing investment in the future and the recent outcome of the Scottish referendum providing added confidence, certainty and optimism, the North Sea Oil & Gas industry is still one of the UKs leading engineering sectors able to offer a long term, rewarding and lucrative career prospects.
