UK Company Kepler Energy has recently announced plans for a new tidal energy scheme which would be constructed in the Bristol Channel.
The firm have begun to seek funding for the £140M scheme which would involve the construction of a 30MW fence located between Aberthaw in Wales and Minehead in Bristol.
In response to comments about the proximity of the proposed project to the recent £1bn, 240MW Swansea Bay tidal lagoon, Chairman Peter Dixon said “We can happily co-exist with tidal lagoons, and the power peaks will occur at different stages of the tide, meaning that the combined output into the grid will be more easily manageable.
“In addition, our… costs will be cheaper than lagoons and in time we will be cheaper than offshore wind generation. Furthermore, investment risk is manageable since turbines are added incrementally to form the fence, with each one generating revenue as it is added.”
The project works from exclusive global licences for the fence technology, developed by the engineering science department at the University of Oxford. It is said that the fence works like a water mill, using the latest carbon composite technology.
Whilst the first phase of the fence scheme would be built to 1km, the long-term vision is to construct a tidal fence more than 10km in length.
Dixon has said: “As our tidal technology can operate in lower velocity tidal waters, there is greater scope for its deployment in the UK and overseas. It means that we can achieve greater economies of scale as our projects are deployed.”
