New Visitor Centre coming to Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2017
Posted on: 28/08/2015

A planning application has been submitted to Wakefield Council for a new visitor centre to be built at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Architects Feilden Fowles, who are based in London, have taken on the project, which will cost £3.8m in total.

Feilden Fowles were established in 2009 and are a RIBA National Award winning practice. Other projects the London-based team have completed include Carlisle Castle, The Lee Centre, and Hazlegrove School.

Located near West Bretton, the Park opened in 1977 and today attracts roughly 400,000 visitors each year. The new centre will keep in line with the historic landscape the rest of the park has, and will host a café, gallery, and shop. It will also have an environmental focus to it as well, including natural ventilation, a dense green roof, and a ground-breaking low energy environmental control system to maintain suitable gallery conditions.

The Park has had a number of development and refurbishment projects over the years, including an underground gallery and estate chapel. The latest sculpture that is currently being added, Wave, features poppies from the Tower of London 2014 WW1 Memorial.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park Executive, Peter Murray, believes that the new visitor centre is an ‘important new element’ for the park to increase its income. With a completion date set for 2017, the project has received a £1.7m donation from Arts Council England. The rest of the money will be achieved through fundraising.
