NuGen set to work with Morson if Moorside Project is given go ahead
Posted on: 25/11/2015

Morson International has announced a new partnership with Northwest based nuclear new build developer NuGen. The partnership will see Morson as the prime supplier of labour to NuGen’s Moorside Project in West Cumbria.

NuGen is a joint venture company between Toshiba and ENGIE (formerly GDF Suez), and is taking forward plans to build the UK’s largest new nuclear power station at Moorside. Located on the West Cumbrian coast close to the Sellafield site, the project aims to build a nuclear power station of up to 3.6GW capacity. Upon completion, the Moorside project will be the biggest nuclear development in Europe, and could supply up to 7% of the UK’s future electricity for decades to come.

The firm has chosen Piccadilly Place in Manchester city centre as an operations base for the development phase of the Moorside Project, meaning that jobs will be created in both Cumbria and Manchester.

“The impact and benefit of the Moorside Project to the local communities, supply chains and labour markets in Cumbria and Lancashire will positively affect the economy, whilst also helping to meet the UK’s considerable energy needs for generations to come.” David Lynchehaun, Head of Client Development at Morson, commented.

“The agreement with Morson is a positive step forward for NuGen and this framework will be extremely valuable in supporting the Moorside Project as we power forward over the coming months and years,” Karen Campbell, head of Human Resources at NuGen, supported.

NuGen is expected to make a final decision on whether to proceed with Moorside by the end of 2018. If the project is given the go ahead, it would see an investment of £10bn and 6,000 employees working on site to build three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors. Construction is due to start in 2020 and the first reactor should be on stream by 2024, and all three by 2026.
