Nuclear Energy Share Set to Rise 50% by 2035
Posted on: 21/03/2016

Oil and gas giant, BP, has said that whilst global energy demand is predicted to grow by 34% between 2014 and 2035, nuclear power generation will grow 50% in total over the same period.

According to the firm, non-fossil fuels will make up 21% of global primary energy, but fossil fuels will account for almost 80% of total energy supplies in 2035, remaining as the dominant form of energy.

The European Union and North America’s nuclear output should see declines of 29% and 13% respectively, with ageing reactors gradually retiring.

With a continuously-increasing trend towards global electrification, and economic and political challenges of nuclear decreasing energy investments, more than half of the growth in global energy consumption is used for power generation.

Bob Dudley, CEO for BP, explained how carbon emissions ‘are likely to continue to increase, indicating the need for further policy action’. Despite this, carbon emissions between 2014 and 2035 are expected to more than half, reflecting gains in energy efficiency and the changing fuel mix. Non-fossil fuels such as renewables and biofuels are predicted to grow 6.6% per year; however, fossil fuels accounted for 86% of energy supply in 2014.
