Offshore Wind on the Rise
Posted on: 09/06/2015

Whilst we may only be halfway through the year, 2015 has provided the British offshore industry with three substantial boosts that have revamped the sector.

One of these was the offshore wind turbine tower manufacturing plant planned for construction in the Humber region, the first of its kind within the UK. Confirmed by CS Wind the new factory will not only contribute to the offshore production within the UK, but will also offer up to 200 direct jobs in the area.

Another significant development is the Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm, confirmed by a 50/50 partnership between offshore developers RWE Innogy and Statkraft. The construction will occur 20 miles off the coast of Lincolnshire, 28 from the coast of North Norfolk offering more than 900 megawatts (enough to power 800,000 households per year). This would contribute dramatically to the UK energy mix and would encourage a move towards renewable energy means within the UK.

A further piece of good news for renewable energy is the agreement of Ofgem to provide a licence to a British consortium which will allow £352 million project for the transmission cable connection to a windfarm off the coast of North Wales- providing a stable connection between one of the world’s largest windfarm’s to the onshore grid.

Nick Medic, RenewableUK’s Director of Offshore Renewables commented: “This flurry of good news announcements will do much to consolidate confidence in the UK’s world-leading market for offshore wind. The benefits to the UK are clear: thousands of new job opportunities, millions more in investment, and a great deal more home-grown clean electricity enhancing our energy security. These announcements demonstrate that if you want to do business in offshore wind, Britain is the go-to destination.

These developments have been strongly linked to the 2013 Offshore Wind Industrial Strategy which offered support and continued investment into offshore wind projects. Following the success of this strategy the government and industry will both continue the development of offshore wind within the UK and will strive to maximise its potential.
