Oil & Gas Workers to move Overseas?
Posted on: 16/04/2015

A recent survey by industry website Rigzone found that more than 71 percent of respondents (out of 963 oil and gas professionals) across the UK have considered moving abroad to find work.

The main reasons stated were the continuous decline of the North Sea industry which in turn has caused a lack of job security working within the UK oil industry.

Mark Guest, international managing director of Rigzone, said: “Oil and gas professionals are highly mobile.

“If assurances cannot be given by the industry about the mid to long-term career opportunities in the UK’s offshore market, our survey indicates that many professionals may simply look for work elsewhere. This could exacerbate recruitment issues in the sector at a time when the industry has already highlighted a shortage of engineering students graduating from British universities.”

The study also revealed that almost half of those working within the industry across the UK (44%) demonstrated little faith in the ability of recent tax cuts to boost investment into the North Sea.

Jake Molloy, regional organiser for the RMT union, said the industry will have to act in order to keep skilled workers within the UK. Adding that “Companies must work at managing this difficult downturn during the reduction in oil prices because the situation will approve again… If we lose the seasoned experts, then the industry will suffer.”
