Planning permission has been granted for what will eventually be the tallest residential building in the UK.
The construction will commence late in 2016, the project will involve the demolition of a 1980’s residential block on the Isle of Dogs in order to make way for the new building- with one part reaching 68-storeys and the other 36-storeys.
The project, designed by architects Foster + Partners, was originally proposed at 73 floors, however Mayor of London Boris Johnson wrote to Tower Hamlets stating that he would not give final approval to the scheme unless the height was reduced.
The main tower will have a floor plate of two intersecting squares, this will allow for optimal views of the surrounding area from the luxury flats.
The proposals will offer 888 homes in total, 188 of which will be affordable accommodation in relation to London wages, a sky garden will also be built at the top of the smaller part of the building.
Works at the 183-189 Marsh Wall site will commence next July and are expected to last for nearly five years across the multi-phase project.
