Plans are shelved for Atlantic Array wind farm

According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), a massive wind farm that was to be established off the North Devon coast and named the Atlantic Array project, has had plans for its development dropped by RWE Innogy, the project developers. The DECC has indicated that simply the technicalities involved had led to the decision and the relevant complicated challenges that apply to the construction of offshore wind farms. The location of the planned Atlantic Array project covered an area of 200sq km (77sq miles), approximately 16.5km (10 miles) from the North Devon coast, 22.5km (14 miles) from South Wales coast and 13.5km (8 miles) from Lundy Island nature reserve, subject to permission being granted.

As many as 240 wind-powered turbines were part of the plans, reaching a height of 220 metres (720ft) and with the ability of generating sufficient electricity to power up to 900,000 homes. According to RWE, it was not viable to continue with development in the Bristol Channel Zone. The scope of the project was of such a size that thousands of jobs would have become available. The UK has some of the most excellent offshore clean energy resources in the world and it is slowly becoming a cheaper option to gather that energy. The DECC has responded by saying that by the year 2020, the UK still expects to deploy significant amounts of offshore wind and that they remain well placed to meet their 2020 renewable energy target.
