Problems with French Reactors Cause Concern over Hinkley
Posted on: 24/04/2015

Britain’s nuclear safety regulator has argued that Britain should ‘learn from problems’ that have occurred with a French reactor which holds strong similarity to one being planned for building in the UK.

The French comparative reactors have displayed “manufacturing anomalies” in elements “particularly important for safety” at Flamanville 3 power plant in Normandy.

This has caused concern to some due to the strong similarities between the French reactor and the one planned for Hinkley Point in Somerset.

Despite the concerns EDF Energy, a company involved with both of the projects, has confirmed that tests are ongoing and the reactors will be improved and safety ensured.

The UK Office for Nuclear Regulation are liaising with French authorities to discuss their options but have said: “The UK currently have no EPR reactors but expects that learning from Flamanville 3 will be taken into account in the manufacture of components intended for the planned new reactor at Hinkley Pont C.”
