Queens Terminal- The New Face of Heathrow Airport
Posted on: 05/12/2014

One could be forgiven for having to do a double take at Heathrow airport due to the changes that have taken place at Terminal 2 in the past few years and reflects the huge progression that transport design has seen in the past few decades.

It has been redesigned and rebuilt to six times its original size, an increase deemed necessary considering Heathrow is the world’s busiest airport in regards to international passengers. The terminal, renamed the Queens Terminal this summer, was designed by Foster + Partners up to planning stage, however the completion has been overseen instead by Luis Vidal + Architects, and construction has been upheld by the joint venture between Ferrovial Agroman and contractor Laing O’Rourke.

Now that the majority of the major construction has taken place, these remaining months are being put into the internal design and completion. At centre stage of the inside design is the 54,000 m2 roof system, worked on by leading UK consultancies such as Hoare Lee Lighting (HLL). The roof consists of a complex lighting system which ensures that “the terminal looks great under both natural and electric light”, says Dominic Meyrick- partner at Hoare Lea Lighting (HLL). The clever design of the roof allows both vision of the sky and protection from harsh natural lighting, furthermore through the use of LED luminaires on the lower lip of the roof natural daylight can be mimicked during the evenings and darker months- giving passengers a taste of holiday sun early.

Whilst there is much more to the Queens Terminal than the roof- it certainly stands as evidence of the advancements that have been made in relation to inner architecture and design. At Blueprint we encourage such advancements and are excited to consider what developments will be made in another decade or two.
