RIBA Launch Competition for Bus Station Regeneration
Posted on: 02/03/2015

The Royal Institute of British Architect has launched an international competition to find the perfect team for a new youth centre in the grade II-listed Brutalist bus station in Preston.

Supporters of the project, Lancashire County Council and Preston Youth Zone, are both hoping for a multi-disciplinary architectural team to get involved and help refurbish this redundant bus shelter into a ‘vibrant place’ for the young people within the local area.

The bus station has experienced a turbulent reaction over the past fifteen years, the threat of demolition was a strong possibility for over a decade, but in late 2013 this threat was eradicated after Ed Vaizey listed the building.

The winning team of the competition will get the chance to redesign the building into a mass communal centre which will play host to a sports hall, climbing wall, fitness suite and areas for recreational activities such as music, dance and crafts.

County Councillor Jennifer Mein said: “We want to see high-quality ideas coming forward for the bus station, whether they’re from here in Lancashire or from elsewhere.

“It is important that we protect the integrity of this listed building, while creating an exciting new facility for generations of our young people.”

This is an excellent opportunity for architectural teams to offer Lancashire a regeneration that will benefit the entire community.
