Renewable Energy to be Priority in May General Election
Posted on: 12/03/2015

A recent energy conference, which involved input from the UK’s four main political parties, has argued that lack of “political will” is the biggest item preventing development of the UK energy sector.

Greg Barker, former energy minister; Baroness Jones of the Green Party; Alan Whitehead, labour MP; Lord Teverson, co-chair of the Lib-Dem parliamentary party committee on climate change, all attended the conference and gave their piece.

All of the aforementioned attendees shared common support for renewable energy, which was greatly appreciated by the Renewable Energy Association (REA), who chaired the conference. Speaking on their behalf Dr Nina Skorupska said: “There is great potential for renewable energy to transform the UK’s energy mix, and while we very much welcome today’s support from a cross-party panel of parliamentarians, it is clear that a lack of political will has held back the progress of the sector.

“We understand that we need to do more as an industry to improve understanding of renewables amongst the public to increase consumer uptake, and put greater pressure on the future government to raise the green agenda.”

A consensus was made that the encouragement of renewable energy projects should be high in the government’s priorities in the upcoming May’s general election. It was argued that in the past five years significant improvements had been made in terms of political attitude towards renewables and climate change, and that this is something that should continue over the next years.
