Route for Crossrail 2 Proposed
Posted on: 03/11/2014

After last week’s report on the Crossrail development in London, Boris Johnson has given his approval to a second Crossrail line after a preferred route was proposed.

The current Crossrail project comprises of a 26 mile tunnel under the city connecting the East to West (completion scheduled 2018). Crossrail 2 will work alongside this current work constructing a 22 mile line running South-West to North-East following similar design and construction techniques as was used for the original Crossrail.

After a regional route from Epsom to Cheshunt was proposed as the Crossrail 2 link, Boris Johnson demonstrated strong support for the second project claiming it as an “essential infrastructure project” in preparation for the anticipated population increase (10 million by 2030). Furthermore, he announced that the government would be prepared to meet half of the costs (estimated at £20 billion), which has sparked concern that the government is favouring development in the South as the government only set aside £6 billion for HS3, a comparable fast rail link in the North.

The benefits of Crossrail 2 are similar to those of its predecessor, including improved commute around London as the new trains and line will be able to accommodate an additional 45,000 passengers per hour. It will also result in improved transport links to over 200,000 homes outside of London opening up more job opportunities for people living in London suburbs.

Whilst the final route is still in discussion and completion is not expected until at least 2030, Crossrail 2 has received substantial support from the public with the response to a recent consultation receiving 80% positive views and if all goes to plan it will prove a significant player in supporting the capital as an economic global competitor.
