UK Infrastructure Projects Demand £400bn in Investment
Posted on: 24/07/2015

New revisions of UK infrastructure plans suggest that more than £400bn of investment could be required to achieve the planned projects.

The updated national infrastructure report includes 265 investment programmes and 299 projects in regards to energy, transport, waste, flood defence, water, and science and research sectors.

Infrastructure law expert Jonathan Hart said that this update was a clear attempt from the government to provide a “report card as to how things are going on the infrastructure front line.

“The national infrastructure pipeline continues the honourable trend, started with the first National Infrastructure Plan, of trying to provide greater transparency as to the state of projects in the pipeline- albeit that features of that pipeline, such as time parameters, remain fuzzy.”

He continued that “big point to note are that economic infrastructure is still- unsurprisingly- completed dominated by energy and transport, with a downward turn overall reflecting the hard times in the oil and gas field affecting the overall projects identified as in, or coming down, the pipeline. It is also worth remembering that regulated utilities make up the majority of current and future spending opportunities. Whatever else this ‘report card’ indicates, it does not suggest that there has been any significant change in direction in the composition of the pre-election pipeline.”

Publication re-releases such as this have been released on a 6-monthly basis since the first release back in December 2013 in attempts to keep both investors and stakeholders in the loop and up-to-date with project developments. All projects in the pipeline form part of the government's '2020 and beyond' vision, and will contribute signficant benefit across the UK.
