Underwater Tunnel between UK and Ireland Suggested
Posted on: 01/12/2014

The Chartered Institute of Logic and Transport (CILT) of Cymru Wales have released a report which considers the possibility of an underwater rail tunnel linking the UK and Ireland.

The think tank suggested that the rail line could run between Holyhead and Dublin, enabling easier access between the two and encouraging improved economic and travel opportunities for a substantial amount of people. In the report, Vision 2035: Cymru Wales: it was stated that the tunnel could be built for around £15billion, a similar amount as was invested in the HS2 project that linked London and Birmingham. Much of this money would likely be provided by the European commission, and this sum is relatively little when one considers the combined cost of Crossrail and HS2/HS3 all currently under development/proposal in the UK.

Whilst the tunnel will not be available until the end of the century it will stand as the finale to a long term transport development occurring within Wales over the next several decades. Dr Andrew Potter, Chair of CILT Cymru Wales, commented on this time frame with “by thinking now about the opportunities and challenges ahead, better solutions can be found that make a real difference to passengers and businesses alike”.

The concept of a link between Wales and Ireland is one of the more substantial developments included in the Vision 2035: Cymru Wales’s report, with promises also being made to establish ‘electrified railways, metro style systems and innovative transport technology by 2020’. All of these updates will see a massive investment into Welsh infrastructure, enabling better connections with the rest of the UK and reviving it both socially and economically.

With infrastructure developments like this occurring both in Wales and England, the industry looks set to be high in demand for labour. If you are looking for work please sign up to our jobs by email service or send a copy of your cv to info@blueprintrecruit.com
