WSP have won the bid to provide the transport planning for a new theme park in Kent.
The park is expected to draw more than 15 million visitors per year, arriving by train, water, rail and car, for this reason the transport logistics are of fundamental importance to the success of the resort.
The resort is one of three entertainment projects currently on-going, and has already been identified in the UK as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NISP).
Bearing in mind the resorts unique location, WSP are planning to maximise the use of sustainable travel by the Thames Clipper ferries, High Speed 1 at Ebbsfleet International Station and the possibility has been raised of extending the eastern section of Crossrail and the FastTrack bus service.
Richard Hutchings, WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff project director comments: “We studied visitor and staff data for major UK and worldwide destinations like Disneyland, Alton Towers and Chessington World of Adventures. By looking at this together with the location’s existing and potential transport links we were able to derive robust visitor and staff arrival and departure profiles and travel mode shares.”
If the NSIP planning approval is given, then a three-year construction project will take place, with the park being scheduled to open in Easter 2020.
Hutchings commented: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work on a very complex and challenging project which has local and political support.”
