Laing O’Rourke Wins £700m Project for Manchester Airport
Posted on: 06/07/2016

International engineering firm Laing O’Rourke is said to have won the Manchester Airport redevelopment, potentially worth up to £700m. As part of the development, work will include demolishing Terminal 1 and expanding the major Terminal 2 with new piers.

It is believed that they had beaten rivals Beijing Construction and Engineering Group, John Sisk & Son and Willmott Dixon. Having previously delivered Heathrow’s Terminal 5 building, Laing O’Rourke win signals another success for the firm as the preferred bidder.

The major Terminal 2 upgrade will see a modernisation, with new baggage handling facilities, alterations and extension of the existing terminal, new piers and multi-storey car parks.

Arcadis is project managing the scheme with Jacobs providing multidisciplinary engineering and selected architectural services for many facilities including terminal, piers, airfield, multi-level car parks and surface access facilities.

Over the next 10 years, Manchester Airport plans to spend roughly £1bn in modernising the airport for its growing demand. Enabling works could now start before the end of the year.
