Delivering Specialist Talent & IR35 Compliance for Large-Scale Data Centre Projects

Situation

In 2021 - 2022, we partnered with a well-established multidisciplinary consultancy with more than 75 years of industry experience. Their Birmingham office had secured several large European data centre projects, including a major scheme in Amsterdam, but they faced significant resourcing challenges.

They lacked the necessary design engineering expertise, particularly mechanical and electrical specialists, and did not have the in-house Revit capability required to deliver projects of this scale. With tight deadlines and a competitive talent market, they needed a fast and flexible solution to bridge the gap.

Process

We worked closely with the client to design a tailored solution that would meet both immediate and long-term needs. After assessing their requirements, we recommended a contractor model to give them rapid access to skilled professionals with the expertise they required.

Over the following two years, we provided a team of more than 20 contractors, supporting both on-site delivery in Birmingham and remote project work. To ensure full compliance, we aligned every placement with the client’s IR35 processes and went a step further by delivering an audit-style presentation. This helped refine their compliance framework, giving them greater confidence in managing their workforce.

Outcome

With our support, the client built a skilled project team capable of delivering complex data centre projects across Europe. The contractor model gave them flexibility to scale their workforce while staying fully compliant with regulations.

Many of the specialists we placed are still working with them today, bringing continuity and expertise to new projects. Our work not only solved their immediate resourcing issues but also helped position them for future success in the data centre sector.
