Principal Mechanical Design Engineer – Building Services (Critical Systems)

Location: Chester (Hybrid Working)

Salary: £60,000 – £70,000 per annum

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a leading building services consultancy working within a specialist critical systems team.

This role offers the chance to lead the delivery of technically complex mechanical building services projects, with a strong focus on Stage 4 detailed design and high-performance engineering solutions.

The successful Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will play a key role in technical leadership, project delivery and team coordination, contributing to innovative and high-quality building services designs across critical environments.

Key Responsibilities

As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

·         Leading the delivery of mechanical building services design projects

·         Producing and reviewing Stage 4 detailed design documentation

·         Developing HVAC system designs, calculations and technical specifications

·         Providing technical leadership across project teams and design delivery

·         Collaborating with electrical engineers, structural engineers and architects

·         Supporting BIM coordination and multidisciplinary design integration

·         Ensuring designs meet industry standards, regulations and client requirements

·         Managing project delivery in line with programme, budget and quality targets

·         Mentoring and supporting junior and intermediate engineers

Requirements

To be considered for this Principal Mechanical Design Engineer role, candidates should have:

·         Proven experience working as a Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer within building services

·         Strong knowledge of HVAC systems and mechanical design principles

·         Experience delivering projects across RIBA Stage 4 detailed design

·         Experience working within consultancy or multidisciplinary engineering environments

·         Strong leadership, communication and coordination skills

·         Ability to manage technical delivery and project teams

Desirable:

·         Experience working on critical systems or mission-critical environments

·         Progression towards or achievement of Chartered Engineer (CEng) status

·         Experience using Revit or BIM software
