Civil / Structural Engineer

Make a difference with a world class company

Rolls-Royce SMR, the UK’s domestic nuclear energy champion, is looking for a talented Civil or Structural Engineer to join Rolls-Royce SMR’s innovative Development Engineering team.  This role provides a unique opportunity to work on the development and testing of new nuclear power station designs that will contribute to the global reduction of carbon emissions.   The role could be based out of Rolls-Royce SMR’s Derby or Warrington offices, with opportunities for hybrid working.

About Rolls-Royce SMR:

Rolls-Royce SMR is a new business, specifically created to design, construct and deliver a new fleet of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) power plants that will play a key role on the journey to Net Zero, as well as providing energy security.  Created through Rolls-Royce’s passion for engineering excellence combined with additional world class investment, this is an exciting new business which expects to become a leading player in the future of energy.

Rolls-Royce SMR operates with a start-up mentality, with a high performing team that drives for pace, efficiency and innovation in everything they do – and will provide a rewarding career for those who want to be bold, and create a legacy.

About the Role:

The Civil / Structural Verification & Test Engineer will act as the focal point in verifying and validating that the civil and structural designs of the SMR power station meet their requirements.  The civil design is one of the key innovation areas for Rolls-Royce SMR, using modular construction approaches to enable an accelerated and more-certain build schedule.  Consequently, you’ll be working with world-leading technology, positively challenging convention and pushing the boundaries of Civil Engineering design in the nuclear energy industry.

The approach being adopted for verification and validation is based on Systems Engineering principles, an approach proven worldwide as an effective method to deliver highly complex products in safety critical and regulated industries.  You will be working with design leads and specialists from across the engineering team to create verification strategies that lay out the activities needed to demonstrate that the design meets its requirements. This is a critical element of the overall programme plan to ensure we prove out all systems and components before the design is finalised.

You will also be involved in the validation of the requirements, have an active role in the testing of novel Civil Engineering designs such as the use of pre-case concrete elements, and will integrate data from the wider programme of verification activities such as from analysis and industry experience.

The role provides a rare and exciting opportunity to get a broad overview of some of the key technical challenges in delivering a new, novel, nuclear power station, working within one of the key areas of innovation for the Rolls-Royce SMR design.

About You:

You will have:

  • Degree level qualifications in Civil or Structural Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • Become professionally recognised through an appropriate professional body, or be working towards it.

  • A broad knowledge of Civil and Structural Engineering issues – ideally with experience of the use of analysis and/or physical testing as part of design verification/substantiation.

  • Experience working with relevant Civil Engineering codes and standards, which might include for example Eurocode 0, 1 & 2, and ACI 318, 349, 350.

  • A willingness to embrace a Systems Engineering mindset, underpinned with a logical approach to solving complex problems.

  • A proactive, positive attitude, with the desire and ability to learn fast, challenge the status-quo, and make a difference.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills able to bring together an interdisciplinary team to solve a problem, and to distil complex technical topics into simple forms.

  • Experience of working with regulatory bodies such as the UK Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and Environment Agency (EA) is desirable, but not essential.

Key Responsibilities of the Role will be:

  • Defining and managing the design Verification/substantiation Strategy for Civil and Structural aspects of the power station, by bringing together expertise from across the wider engineering team.

  • Defining the scope and deliverables for verification activities within the strategy, such as physical test programmes or specific analyses.  You may also get involved in running physical test programmes.

  • Applying technical knowledge to act as an Intelligent Customer when discussing methods of verification with design teams and suppliers.

  • Reviewing Civil or Structural related activities against relevant codes and standards to ensure they are conducted to the necessary level of quality.

  • Understanding the expectations of regulatory bodies for verification evidence and taking this into account in the Verification Strategy.

  • Collating Civil or Structural related verification evidence as it is produced to assess design compliance to requirements.

Benefits and Work Conditions:

  • A highly competitive salary is on offer along with a performance related bonus.
  • A range of flexible benefits are available to choose from, enabling you to create a bespoke package to suit your needs.

  • Travel: the location of work can be either Derby or Warrington, potentially with some travel to work with suppliers, support test campaigns etc.

  • Flexible working / hybrid and remote working patterns are available with agreement

  • Working hours are 37.5 hrs per week with some additional hours as and when required.

  • Rolls-Royce SMR is an equal opportunities employer.
